OCASI submitted a brief to the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration.
Our brief focuses on the possible negative impacts and unforeseen consequences of Bill C-12 on women and other survivors of gender-based violence, and disproportionate impact on Black and other racialized people and communities.
These measures would weaken refugee protections, undermine Charter rights, and contravene Canada's international legal obligations. Rushing a bill of this magnitude without meaningful consultation from human rights and refugee experts will endanger migrants and refugees.
Ultimately, the legislation risks exacerbating existing delays while creating new systemic gaps and problems.
