In Search of Refuge

The first note of alarm came by email through the African Solidarity Network e-list. The Network is an alliance of leaders of African descent from the continent and the diaspora. The leadership of the Ethiopian Association, a longtime OCASI member agency, was reaching out for support from other service agencies. There were a number of refugee claimants from Ethiopia who found themselves homeless on the streets of Toronto.

RFP: Online Course Content Development

OCASI is seeking proposals to develop and update the content of the “Foundations of Settlement Work in Ontario” (FSW), a self-directed e-learning course in English and French. The project is to begin in August 2023, with completion by January 31, 2024.

Survey: Human Rights, Gender, & Emergency Shelters in Canada

The purpose of this survey is to understand service providers’ perspectives on applying human rights principles and gender-sensitive approaches within emergency shelters in Canada and to develop national rights-based shelter standards using a GBA+ framework to advance the right to housing for women and gender-diverse people.

The Tenant Leaders’ Toolbox: Resources for Housing Rights Advocacy

This toolkit offers tenant leaders with a range of practical information to support their advocacy work to claim the right to housing in their communities. It provides an overview of the main principles of the right to housing, Canada’s obligations, and government policies. It includes practical tools to help tenants mobilize their communities and effectively participate in decision-making processes.

Contribute to OHRC’s Action Plan to Tackle Anti-Black Racism in Education

The Ontario Human Rights Commission is accepting written submissions to identify concrete and practical solutions to combat anti-Black racism and hold duty-holders accountable. Visit ohrc.on.ca to learn how to send in your submissions. Community engagements will be held this summer and fall. 
Submissions will be accepted until September 30, 2023.
