OCASI Communiqué - Jack Layton

AddToAny

The Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI) joins Canadians in mourning the passing of Jack Layton, leader of the Official Opposition and the federal New Democratic Party of Canada.

We honour his courage in battling cancer, his public service to Canada, and his commitment to his values. We appreciate his hard work on issues of concern to immigrants and refugees, over the length of his political career in municipal and later federal politics. Above all, we remember his optimism and joy for life.

In a final act of generosity, he wrote a letter to Canadians in the midst of his personal struggle, and left us these inspiring words:

"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world."

On behalf of the Members, Board and Staff, OCASI offers our sincere condolences to Olivia Chow, his family, friends and colleagues. He will be deeply missed.
