OCASI – Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants welcomes the federal government’s significant funding announcement to advance equality and safety for women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people across Canada.

The commitment, announced by Minister of Finance François-Philippe Champagne ahead of the upcoming federal budget, provides $660.5 million in increased ongoing funding over five years to the Department for Women and Gender Equality (WAGE).

“This investment is a crucial step forward in sustaining the vital work of women’s and community organizations,” said Debbie Douglas, OCASI Executive Director. “We are encouraged to see this tangible commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of women and gender-diverse people in our communities.”

Myriam Mekni, Eastern Region Director on the OCASI Board and Chief Executive Officer of CCI Ottawa, who represented OCASI at the National Gallery of Canada announcement, added: “This funding provides a stable foundation for the frontline organizations who are building a safer, more equitable Canada. It signals that the government is listening and is prepared to be a partner in this critical work.”

The federal commitment breaks down as follows:

    • $223.4 million over five years ($44.7 million ongoing) to strengthen the federal strategy against gender-based violence, with targeted support for survivors from Indigenous and underserved communities.
    • $382.5 million over five years ($76.5 million ongoing) to revitalize and stabilize efforts to advance women’s equality in Canada.
    • $54.6 million over five years to support the 2SLGBTQI+ community, including $7.5 million specifically for security at Pride events.

OCASI acknowledges the leadership of the Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister for Women and Gender Equality, for her continued engagement with our sector and her dedication to advancing these critical priorities.

We look forward to seeing this commitment reflected in the forthcoming federal budget and to continued collaboration with Minister Valdez and the federal government. OCASI remains dedicated to working in partnership to advance economic and social equity for all residents, including refugee and migrant women and gender-diverse people.
