Would your agency be interested in participating in the Toronto Tenant School for Settlement Workers that will provide in-depth training for front-line settlement workers dealing with clients with rental housing difficulties?
The Toronto Tenant School for Settlement Workers is a project of the Federation of Metro Tenants' Associations and is funded by the City of Toronto to provide in-depth training in tenant rights to settlement workers whose clients may be facing housing difficulties.
The Toronto Tenant School will hold two school terms in January and March 2015. A school term consists of six two hour workshops. The workshops are given on a weekly basis and are presented by staff of either local legal aid clinics, or from agencies that specialize in specific areas of tenant rights. Each workshop will have a limited number of spaces for participants. Participants will register for the entire session of six workshops. Upon completion of the each term, participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
The first tenant school will run every Monday from January 12th to February 23rd 2015 at CultureLink, 2340 Dundas St. W. Ste. 301. The deadline for registration for the January – February 2015 term is Friday, December 19th 2014 at 5:00pm.
The topics covered will include:
- Finding Housing: legal rights and strategies
- Introduction to Landlord and Tenant Law
- Repairs and Maintenance
- Rent Increases in the Private Sector
- Evictions under the RTA
- Advocating for and with your client
This project is modeled after the Connecting Communities Tenant School, a two year project of the Federation of Metro Tenant's Associations and the Law Foundation of Ontario that has just finished in October 2014. The Connecting Communities Tenant School project held 5 tenant schools over the course of two years. 79 settlement workers from 24 agencies participated in the 31 workshops. The overall evaluation of each of the schools was excellent with almost all participants expressing interest in attending more workshops and having more tenant schools.
There is no cost to either the agency or the settlement worker participating in the Tenant School.
