The federal government is increasing citizenship processing fees by $230 for applications received after January 1, 2015 – an increase of more than 40%. The Right of Citizenship fee is to remain unchanged at $100.
With the increase, the new citizenship application fees will be a total of $630.
This change comes within less than a year after the last increase. On February 6, 2014 the government doubled citizenship application fees, bringing it to a total of $400. Increased requirements and these higher fees will make citizenship further out of reach for many applicants – particularly low-income residents. Racialized residents and women are over-represented among those who are low-income, and will be the most affected by the change.
