A History of Race/ism
Produced by Tim McCaskell
This educational piece suggests that in order to understand the nature of racism and how to overcome it, it is first necessary to understand the history of racism. More specifically, it is necessary to acknowledge that racism has not always existed and it is not an innate characteristic of human beings. Thus, racism can be overcome. The author presents the history of racism starting from as early as the Ancient World, and continuing until the present. Also covered is the historical nature and existence of sexuality, gender, culture, and scientific racism. The author also cites colonialism as a primary cause of racism, and suggests that the impact of this racism far exceeds the period of colonialism.

World History of Racism in Minutes (WHORM)
World History of Racism in Minutes (WHORM) is a simulation activity that takes participants through a series of interacting tableaux to portray the historical origins of racism. It helps participants understand how racist ideas are connected to present and past inequalities, power relationships and conflicts. WHORM requires a minimum of 35 participants, and a large clear space such as a gymnasium. It can be played as a half day activity with debriefing, or broken up and played over a series of days to give participants more time for reflection. This is not an introductory activity. Participants should have already explored the impact of racism on their lives and come to the point that they are asking “where did this all come from?”
WHORM was developed in 1986 by Tim McCaskell of the Equity Department of the old Toronto Board of Education (now in the Toronto District School Board). Originally designed for secondary students at the Toronto Board of Education's anti-racist student training programs, it has since been used hundreds of times with secondary students, teachers, university courses and adult learners, and has been adapted for use at the senior elementary level.
